Fridays at the Hornell YMCA

Every Friday after school, students in the A3 Program head to the Hornell YMCA to make use of the facilities. Students can take part in a couple different classes including art, music, aerobics, gym, and swim. Not only do the students get to participate in fun and educational YMCA activities, but they get to meet new friends from the Hornell Intermediate School and Bryant School. The YMCA welcomes all three schools on Fridays to enjoy the facilities as part of the 21st Century Grant.

We would like to send a big thank you out to Mark Morrissey and his excellent staff for providing such great opportunities for the 21st Century Grant participants.

Towne Talk Bakery Visits the A3 Program

On May 13, Mike Volino and Tabitha of Canisteo’s own Towne Talk Bakery were gracious enough to visit the A3 Program. Mike baked a marble cake and Tabitha brought all of her decorating tools to show the students the many different ways to decorate a cake. Mike and Tabitha also explained the business end of the Towne Talk Bakery. Students learned that the price of a cake is more than just the ingredients, but also the baker and decorators time put into the cake. Mike is at the bakery by 4 a.m. EVERY morning! Wow, that is amazing! We want to thank Mike and Tabitha for visiting our program.

21st Century Consortium Event – Hornell YMCA

The 21st Century Consortium Event was held on May 10 at the Hornell YMCA, and what a success it was! There were over 100 students from 5 school districts in attendance, participating in Gym, Swim, Project-Based Science Enrichment, Art and Music, Drums Alive Aerobics, and a consortium-wide game of dodge ball!

Money "Fun"damentals

Fifth through Eighth grade students are learning the importance of smart consumerism.  Nancy Reigelsperger of Cornell Cooperative Extension has been visiting the A3 Program teaching about money. The students are learning how to write checks, make bank deposits, and ATM withdrawals. Students are also learning the difference between needs and wants.

Cooking Matters

Students are learning the importance of nutrition in a program offered by Cornell Cooperative Extension. Pat Lamphier has been teaching third and fourth grade students in the A3 Program all about living a healthy, happy life. Students are learning many important skills involving food prep and food consumption. The students especially love this program as they get to eat the foods they have prepared.

Alfred University Aerodynamics Challenge

On May 3, twenty-two A3 students traveled to Alfred University to compete in an aerodynamics challenge against 4 other school districts. The day started out with Dr. Pilgrim explaining what aerodynamics meant, why it is important, and how it affects the student’s lives. After the short introduction, students completed an introductory project before they moved onto the final challenge of the day. The egg drop challenge was a very interesting one to watch. Each group of 3 students  were given only certain materials which they had to use to create something that would protect an egg from being dropped at different distances. Students were extremely excited to be their own engineers and truly enjoyed being in a college classroom.

Wildlife Defenders

On Wednesday, April 30, the Wildlife Defenders paid a visit to the Canisteo-Greenwood A3 Program. The students were introduced to some really cool animals! The Wildlife Defenders introduced each animal to the students, gave a brief history including information of the species and habitats in which the animals can be found, and walked each animal around the auditorium so the students could get a closer look.

The Wildlife Defenders did a great job with the students and animals, and we cannot thank them enough for such a great visit to our school. The students had a great experience.

RMSC and RockVentures Field Trip

On March 22, 2014, 17 A3 students traveled to Rochester to spend the day at the Rochester Museum and Science Center (RMSC) and RockVentures. Students participated in rock climbing before taking a quick lunch break and then headed over to RMSC. The trip was a huge success as students learned the importance of supporting each other as they try new things.
