Field Trip to Local "Best Kept Secret" The Dresser-Rand Challenger Learning Center

"Mission Control: Can you hear us? A-3 has some important data for you. Over."

Today 30 of our Canisteo-Greenwood A-3 After School Students (& a few lucky chaperones) had the privilege of spending the day at THE DRESSER-RAND CHALLENGER LEARNING CENTER, located at 182 East Union Street, Suite 2, Allegany, NY 14706...A space-themed educational facility with programs designed to stimulate interest in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM education) through a series of hands-on experience and simulations tied to classroom learning and team building.

Our A-3 Students spent a full day engaged in a variety of experiments, activities, and missions. 3rd & 4th Grade Students began their day as aspiring scientists, engineers, and mathematicians rotating within a Discovery STEM Lab that included over 10 hands on experiments.

A3 Scientists in Action!
While our Scientists were at work, the older students worked in groups of 2 disassembling a lawn mower engine. The level of focus, interest, and skill exhibited by these students was amazing!

Both groups had the opportunity to enjoy a simulated journey into space (modeled after The infamous Challenger mission of 1986).

A3 Crew Members Prepare for Take Off
Our older students spent the afternoon in an Earth-orbiting spacecraft...the crew worked together, each assigned a crucial role, studying Halley's Comet by constructing a space probe, studying rock samples, navigating the ship, and helping each other stay alive and safe...a simulated activity that seemed more real than you can imagine. Our students were all amazed at what they were able to accomplish...truly an amazing afternoon full of pride and accomplishment.

Younger Students spent the afternoon just as busy, working in teams, to build catapults and glass towers.

Team Work!

Today's field trip exemplified the joy of collaborative learning. We are so thankful for the wonderful, engaging staff and volunteers who offered us an amazing, unique experience...we can't wait to return! If you haven't had the opportunity to visit our area's "best kept secret," we hope you do!
