School Success Series

I am happy to announce that our partner Pro-Action will be providing a great series of programming for our community called the School Success Series.  This program is geared towards the parents or guardians of the students involved with the A-3 program.  Our fist of a 4 part program is called "Strength Based Communication," which will focus on helping your child be the best they can be.  The presenter will be Kelly Wells, a NYSEP Certified Parenting Educator, and is open to all parents and guardians of the students enrolled in the A-3 program.  We will provide food, drinks and child programing for all of those involved so bring the whole family to this exciting series.  We will be offering a free entry into a raffle that will be given away before the end of the night.  If you have any questions check out the flyer below.  All students in the A-3 program will be getting a slip to be filled out if you plan on attending and  a copy of the flyer.  If you have any questions feel free to ask dcook@cgcsd.org.  We highly encourage all to attend as this can provide information to better help your son or daughter be the best they can.

Surviving a Jello Earthquake

One of our enrichment groups has students problem solving real word problems using science and engineering skills.  In this scenario students had to develop and build a structure that could withstand an earthquake.  Don't worry Mrs. Thompson is a highly trained individual and it helps that we are using Jello and not real seismic activity.  The Jello is a great representation of seismic waves and how an earthquake would effect structures.

We also have our students building complex structures and machines with legos.  Mr. Graham helps students build moving machines all the while they are having fun.

 This is our first opportunity to use the gym as the fall sports are over and the winter sports have not started.  Our students took advantage of the opportunity to let their competitive juices flow in the first game of kickball.  Not sure who really won though!

I hope the ball comes to me!

Catch Kids Club

One of our Partners comes to the school every Wednesday for 6 weeks to provide our students with enrichment.  This particular program increases students awareness of nutritional and physical education.  We are providing students with the best information to make informed decision.

Another day in the A3 neighborhood

How can you pass up this nice weather when it is almost November!  I wouldn't want to cross either.

The anticipation is the hardest part!

Not really sure how this can be fun but I am in!

How tall can you build a structure that can hold a tennis ball while a fan is trying to blow it to the next century!  (It has to be at least 18inches!  Mrs. Thompson's rules!)  These students are attempting to solve this problem using science and engineering. 
 And I thought school was boring!



This has been an on going project the students have been working on with the culmination of a couple of structures that "Blew the competition away" (Yea it is cheesy but we like it)

Foster Lake

Thanks for stopping by to check out our future ENS people.  We are taking core samples from a tree that was 43 years old!  Makes me feel good.

 





Fearless Will leads our search into the unknown looking for our lost turtle utilizing the finest telemetry equipment AU has to offer our students.  P.S. (We did find the turtle and it was wooden).

 

The best part was yet to come!  We had pizza and cookies for dinner.  All in all it was a successful first off site field trip for the A-3 program.  

 

 

Welcom Back

Welcome Back!!!!!!

Hi all and thanks for checking out Canisteo's blog spot.  Just to keep everyone informed regarding our program and some up coming events. 
- The program runs from 3-5 weekdays Mon-Fri.  We will be going to the YMCA of Hornell on Fridays to participate in different recreational activities.  Permission slips NEED to be signed and returned to the program before students are eligible to attend.  We will be going this Friday 10/17/14.
-  Our first field trip is to Foster Lake up near Alfred University.  Students will be using spatial technology to predict coordinates off a map in the woods of Foster Lake.  We will be going after school on Monday 10/20/14 and returning around 7.   Permission slips need to be returned for this field trip by Thursday 10/16/14.  Snacks and pizza will be provided and it is STRONGLY recommended to wear very warm clothes and old clothes as it may be muddy. 
-  We currently are offering 3 different enrichment programs: Mr. Don Graham is teaching engineering with LEGOS.  Mrs. Thompson is working on problem solving/building skills.  Ms. Brianna McGuire is offering beginning guitar for older students. 
-  This year we have brought on more staff to assist with HW help and we are also utilizing our IPADS to look up information and CCLS to better assist students with their HW questions. 
-  We will be having outside services come to Canisteo to provide different enrichment programs starting this week.  On Wed. Cornell Cooperative Extension (CCE) will be providing Catch Kids Up, a food experience program.
